Going to your comment, yes, I think that is quite right. It's quite a neat psychological trick, because for example, ten-year old technology would be a miracle to someone 20 years ago, and so on. Yet, we never seem to be happy with the state-of-the-art and just keep making more stuff.

Yes, I enjoy some technology like everyone. As you see, I take bird photos that require technology. But I think it would be equally easy for people to be happy with 1/10th or even 1/50th of the level of technology and energy usage. Would YouTube really be worse if 1080P or even 720P were the maximum video quality and we were limited to only a dozen videos to watch per month? Now that's a contrived situation but basically, it seems like unlike our physical appetites, or appetite for new information and new stuff is limitless, and certainly not always to the benefit of humankind as you said.
